Voluntary Fund for the Promotion of the Development of Grassroots Sports Now Questionable for UK Betting Firms
A voluntary fund for the promotion of the development of grassroots sport is now being pushed through by the UK government. Thus, UK betting firms were requested by the government to give contributions to the said fund.
According the Guardian, Gerry Sutcliffe, minister for sport and tourism, wrote to prominent firms in the industry of betting and sports governing bodies about his plans for such fund which will actually be handled by the Sport England.
Sutcliffe, in his letter, explained that the system gives all parties the opportunity to show goodwill and that the firms should contribute seriously and significantly. Contributions must be considerable.
But surprisingly the representatives of the British betting industry did not have a positive reaction towards the plan of the UK government, that is being promoted by the minister for sport and tourism.
In a certain newspaper, Clive Hawkswood, the chief executive of the Remote Gambling Association, gave his words about the plan. Newspaper confirms that Hawkswood is not that supportive in regards to it. He believes that so far, Sutcliffe failed to perform enough consultations with the members of the industry.
“Neither the online or offline sectors have been consulted as a group”, the chief executive said.
Just the previous month, Sportingbet.com confirmed its move to make a new voluntary payment to the Horserace Betting Levy Board. The online bookmaker might have realized the real need to make such move.
Where will this issue on voluntary fund for the promotion of the development of grassroots sport bring the UK government and members of the sports betting industry in the country, it is still unknown. This might go a long way. But hopefully, all will still eventually end well. Parties should find time to sit down together and talk to settle everything that needs to be settled.
