Steve Downie Re-signs with Tampa Bay Lightning

Steve DownieThe Tampa Bay Lightning have resigned right wing Steve Downie to a contract lasting two years.  The contract is said to be worth $3.7 million.

Last year, his first debut for a full NHL season, Downie scored 22 goals and 46 points in his 79 participated games.  Last season, he also recorded 208 penalty minutes.  He also claimed second ranking in hits for his team with a total of 140 hits.  Further, he became the first NHL player to set a record of a minimum 20 goals as well as 200 penalty minutes all in the same season since back in 2001-2002 when Theo Fleury did the same.

In 2005, Downie was drafted as the 29th overall selection because he had true skill and while he hasn’t shown that the greatest over the past few years – especially with Philadelphia when he only scored here and there – he did show potential last season and hopefully, will show that same skill and potential this season.

Maybe he just needed to Tampa Bay to show him the light to turn his entire NHL career around at 23 years of age.  He’s even received a promotion up to a line, which feature two of his star teammates on the Lightning – Martin St. Louis as well as Steven Stamkos.

He has the skill and he has the potential to succeed this season so look for him to do just that.  He’s going to have an impressive season with a record for goals.
