Legalized NFL Betting
“Legalized NFL betting,” says Houston owner Robert McNair, ‘is inevitable.” Apparently the league is fighting a losing battle in their efforts to discontinue it. Executives in the National Football League have been fighting this battle for years, and it has finally come to the breaking point.
The Wall Street Journal has reported that McNair said that he believes that the game integrity has always remained as a duty to be protected; however, it has been lessened by society because of moral issues about the prospect of gambling.
Delaware, a state that has already legalized sports betting, seems to have been the first to jump on that particular bandwagon. It’s almost certain that other states will follow, much to the fear and consternation of NFL executives. They are attempting to file a lawsuit to put a stop to such endeavors, and would rather not have states retain the right of making their own choices on a national sport within their own state borders.
The lawsuit, according to officials, will most likely be denied. State bills generally have the right of retaining their own laws, unless there is compelling argument and evidence to the contrary. As such, it is highly likely the NFL will suffer for their attempt.
Other states, such as Pennsylvania and New Jersey, are watching what happens in the case of Delaware. Most likely if Delaware succeeds in retaining their right to bet, as passed by state legislature, the other states will quickly follow suit. Of course, they would want to compete with Delaware in the money-making field of legalized betting.
Commissioner Roger Goodell of the National Football League has been well known to speak out against gambling, and betting on his sport, and has done his best to quell it as much as possible. He has, however, tried to reach a middle ground in gambling in general, and now has nothing against it except in relation to his sport. According to Goodell, gambling is an acceptable form of revenue, as long as football games are not involved. Goodell told Newsday that as stadiums are being created and developed that lotteries are becoming more involved in the participation. Individuals are building stadiums by lottery profits even using the proceeds for educational and learning purposes. This is something that we all need to accept because it’s something that is not going away anytime soon. It’s a dangerous position to place himself in, though.
Gambling itself has become widely accepted throughout the country. More and more states are accepting casinos, and OTB lounges are becoming so common as to make the initials generally known. According to BettingIce, it is more than likely that Delaware will succeed in defeating the lawsuit, and NFL betting will be added to this. As a business venture, it is not surprising. As America’s sport of choice, there are many people that would like to make money off of it, and do. It is only a matter of making those bets legal. After all, we are all well aware that Super Bowl Sunday is the biggest day in the country for bets, outstanding or otherwise.
