Former Head of an Online Sports Betting Site Sentenced to More Than 4 Years in Prison
Yes, a former head of an online sports betting site was sentenced to more than 4 years in prison. The name is Gary Kaplan and he is actually a former head of the BetOnSports online gambling empire. He was sentenced to more than 4 years in prison because of sports betting violations.
The sentence was given by a US judge and was the maximum allowed for an operator of an online sports betting site. This was under the terms of a shaky plea arrangement.
Well, Kaplan has already spent two years in jail. He was arrested in March of 2007. Just in August, he pleaded guilty and so was given a sentence of 41 to 51 months and along with this is a forfeiture of around $44 million.
According to the Justice Department, the arrangement still leaves Kaplan with a little fortune considering he publicly listed the online sports betting site on the popular London Stock Exchange.
Kaplan in a way, has admitted in the court that he had violated certain US laws by trying to invite US customers to place their bets through his online sports betting site. He was aware then that he has to face the consequences of his wrong move or decision. He pleaded guilty and it seemed that way back then, he completely accepted the sentence given to him.
What happened to Kaplan should actually be a reminder for all operators and non-operators of online sports betting sites and even land-based sports betting firms that there are laws, most especially in the US, that they should respect and of course follow. They should understand that gambling doesn’t seem acceptable for everyone and so laws are created to somehow lessen the problems that may possibly arise. They should be good followers of these laws.
