649th Place
The 649th is the last place you want to be when you walked out of the World Series of Poker held in Las Vegas, which was exactly where Kia Hamadani placed. While Kia walked out of the event, what is called the “Money Bubble Bust” did just that as the other constants still in, celebrated as there were now in the payout period, meaning they will have a cash prize for being in.
The field started at 6,494 and was well over half gone by Saturday, 749 was left sitting with chips still on the table. With so many different contestants the complete number of countries in the tournament almost doubled the amount of countries represented at the Olympics, which goes to show someone the sheer size that Texas hold ‘em has grown.
Since the game was introduced in Las Vegas in the late 60’s the game had very little growth on its own, a few books over the next few years increased its publicity a bit as well. The game did not take off big until the 21st century while the game was televised it did not have much popularity until the “lipstick camera.” This is the camera that allows views to see the player’s cards. With this new camera popularity soared though the new era, and exploded during coverage of the 2003 world poker series, which some believe to be the big break the series needed to become so large. While the World Series has grown remarkably, the internet Texas Hold ‘em world has grown just as large, just as quickly with gambling sites becoming increasing popular. Internet gambling has also created a way to enter into the World Series of Poker, with most players starting out online and working their way into the Series, it has turned into a portal for most.
The 2003 winner, Chris Moneymaker, was an underdog to most, and started off by playing online.
Walking away as 649th is not as hard as you would think, although Kia would have liked to walked away like Chris Moneymaker did, with 1st place and a lot of cash in hand. Kia is expected to be in next year’s tournament, but this time his buy in is paid for by a sponsoring company. As money bubble burst celebration ended with Kia, the games picked up as players felt relieved to be in the finals. Most would not change their experience there (Actually I am sure most would want to win it), but would only improve for next year. Everyone at the tournament shows different strategies, and with such a huge turnout of different players and styles no one can be for certain what will win at this year’s World Series of Poker.
